Coaching
2023 CCEF Conference recordings on "Trauma" 2024 CCEF Conference in Chattanooga, TN. Topic was "Rest". The best takeaway for me at this conference was the growing ability to determine the difference between sin, not sin, and finiteness - a.k.a. creatureliness. So many things that happen are not necessarily sin, but just plain not knowing something because we are finite, not God.

Bully Pulpit: Confronting the Problem of Spiritual Abuse in the Church. Listened to the audiobook, as recommended by Patrick Drury. This book chronicles what problems churches have faced that are looking for the wrong kind of leaders - charismatic and gifted people - without being concerned about holding them accountable appropriately or their character. Many churches believe pastors and ignore victims even though in most cases victims would not come forward falsely.

Nurturing Peace and Joy, Susan Millsaps: Susan pointed out what difference it makes focusing on the Lord (Ps. 73) even in very challenging circumstances. She recommended that we take 5-10 min three times each day to focus on joy. Each of these times has 3 steps, starting with greeting, showing awareness of His presence. We notice God's goodness and wonders out loud: what makes you smile or stirs curiosity? Wonder - become curious, ponder, adore. Secondly, we listen to Him through His Word, reading out loud. Thirdly, we respond by praying, adoring Him as worthy out loud.

Abuse and Power, Laurie Stewart: she summarized what spiritual abuse looks like, citing the Bully Pulpit by M. Kruger. She challenged churches that have such high value on leaders having expertise and charisma and having many skills. What about humility and honesty, and accountability? She pointed out how the conflict in culture is permeating the church, asking how can leaders become seduced by power because of a lack of these values.

Anger workshop by Patrick Drury: This workshop presenter focused much time on what God's word actually say about anger, encouraging conciliators to give this word study as homework. On a piece of paper, he recommends separating out verses on 3 categories: God's anger, Jesus' anger, and man's anger. Several illustrations he uses to help men in particular understand how they may be using anger are: *Warning light on the dashboard - it's evidence of a problem. He's felt invalidated or didn't get what he wanted (James 4); Father wound he's compensating for; It's a smokescreen for sometime else going on. *Hammer - we need more delicate tools relationally; anger's just hurting people *Ground them using an exercise - have them feel something where they know the weight of their bodies.

The Power of Words, Adrienne Elwell, workshop: how to de-escalate conflict by: Showing empathy, Taking ownership (ex. I statements), Constructive suggestions: proposing solutions instead of highlighting problems, Active listening: repeating back what was said to show understanding (so what I hear you saying is...), Encouraging this communication at the beginning of a meditation session. What increases conflict is blaming, generalizations, and aggression, as well as sarcasm - which undermines trust and inflames emotions. These words cause defensiveness, making resolution more difficult. Parties may use sarcams to shield oneself, hoping it won't be taken as an attack, but it can go too far quickly.

One of the main learning tools for me to become a better conciliator has been to teach Biblical Conflict Resolution to others. I have been teaching seminars on this subject to church and mission settings around the world for over 15 years now, including at least 10 times in the last year. This has helped me greatly to being able to readily apply the Biblical principles of peacemaking during conflict coaching and mediation sessions. Not only that, but the teaching has also opened up many opportunities for me to minister to other people, whether it be through formal or informal conflict coaching. I would therefore like to suggest again to include the teaching of Biblical peacemaking as a continuing education activity. Would it be possible to add a section in the form where this could be noted? Thanks!

Book by Wade Mullen: Something’s Not Right The author describes common methods that individuals and organizations use to gain power and cover up their wrongdoings. These will help to identify patterns of abuse and help stop the cycle of destruction in people’s lives.

Book by Diane Langberg: Suffering and the Heart of God The book explains that healing is possible for people who have been through a lot of trauma and abuse, and that much patience and the reflection of Jesus’ love and care is needed from all those who are trying to help the suffering.

I had intended to have this year's virtual conference address this requirement. I have started listening to the workshops from this years conference. When it was going on I was consumed dealing with my wife's acute Leukemia. I am in catch up mode. I was going use box 8&9 but they won't allow entry. I thought they were to be depreciated for 2024 reporting, but since it is now 2024 I guess they no longer function. If serving as a cert coach qualifies in any way for this, I have way more than 10 hours for 2023.
