People often come into a mediation with suspicion, frustration, and an agenda. The mediator can easily become a target of that suspicion and frustration if they do not carefully navigate the tumultuous waters of the conflict set before them. In this workshop we will consider some important principles of how we can avoid becoming a third party to the conflict we are mediating by drawing on wisdom from the Proverbs.

People experiencing conflict in relationships can benefit from working with “Case Studies” that deepen their understanding of peacemaking principles by applying them to scenarios similar to their own conflict. Applying the principles to characters in the case study provides a bridge to being able to apply those same principles to themselves. We will discuss several ideas for such case studies and the workshop formats that can assist parties in deepening their understanding of heart idolatry, confession, repentance, and forgiveness. You will come away with new tools in your reconciliation toolkit!

Recent #MeToo and #ChurchToo movements, and high-profile abuse cases, have made power imbalance and abuse a hot topic. Christian Conciliators need to know how to navigate these serious issues. The culture demands a victim-centric approach to abuse allegations (including mandatory investigations, public exposure, and worldly justice). In contrast, this workshop aims to educate Christians Conciliators with a biblical perspective of power and abuse issues, while encouraging them to maintain a Christ-centric and trauma-informed approach to biblical peacemaking that offers hope for redemption for both victim and offender.
