Guidelines for Confession
Conflict Resolution vs Reconciliation - Lesson 4, Question 25, p. 64
Confession is a sacred act that allows individuals to unburden their hearts and seek reconciliation with God. Among the essential Guidelines for Confession, the final and arguably the most important is to "Trust in Christ's Forgiveness." This guideline is not just a reminder but a cornerstone of Christian faith, assuring believers that their sins are forgiven through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
Trusting in Christ's forgiveness means placing our confidence not in human judgment but in the divine promise of redemption. The Holy Scripture provides numerous affirmations of this promise. Psalm 103:11-13 beautifully captures the boundless mercy of the Lord: "For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him."
This passage emphasizes the vastness of God's love and His willingness to forgive. Similarly, in Colossians 1:13-14, we read: "He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins." This scripture reassures us that through Christ, we are liberated from the darkness of sin and welcomed into the light of His kingdom, where forgiveness is freely given.
Furthermore, Ephesians 1:7-10 declares: "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ." This passage reveals the richness of God's grace and the grand plan of salvation fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
It is crucial to remember that whether or not the other person forgives you, you are forgiven in Christ based on the promises of Holy Scripture. Human forgiveness, while important, does not define your standing before God. The assurance of forgiveness in Christ is grounded upon His sacrificial act on the cross.
As 1 Peter 2:24 proclaims: "He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed." This verse encapsulates the essence of Christ's atonement, affirming that through His wounds, we receive healing and forgiveness.
By trusting in Christ's forgiveness, we embrace the transformative power of His grace, allowing us to move forward in faith and righteousness. This trust is not just a guideline but a profound truth that brings peace to the penitent heart.
