How does God forgive me?
Conflict Resolution vs Reconciliation - Lesson 5, Forgive as God Forgave You, Question 2, p. 71
In our journey through life, we daily fall short of God's expectation. These shortcomings, known as sins, are not merely dismissed or brushed aside by our heavenly Father. Instead, they are acknowledged, and their weight is fully recognized. God's justice demands that the penalty for sin be paid, and this payment is not trivial. As it is written in Hebrews 9:22, "Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins."
This underscores the gravity of sin and the seriousness with which God views it. Sin creates a chasm between humanity and God, and this separation cannot be bridged by human effort alone. The shedding of blood, symbolizing the ultimate sacrifice, is required to atone for these transgressions. It is through this act of atonement that we find the path to forgiveness.
The sacrificial system of the Old Testament, with its meticulous rituals and offerings, pointed towards a greater reality—the coming of Jesus Christ. Jesus, the spotless Lamb of God, offered Himself as the perfect and final sacrifice for our sins. His blood, shed on the cross, fulfilled the requirements of God's justice. Through His sacrifice, we are granted forgiveness and reconciled with God.
1 John 1:7 further illuminates this truth: "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin." This passage emphasizes the ongoing relationship we are invited into—a relationship marked by walking in the light and being continually cleansed by the blood of Jesus.
It is essential to recognize that forgiveness does not imply that our sins are excused or overlooked. Rather, it highlights the profound mercy and grace extended to us through Jesus' sacrifice. We are called to live in the light of this truth, embracing the forgiveness offered and striving to walk in righteousness.
The forgiveness of sins is a testament to both God's justice and His mercy. The shedding of blood was necessary for atonement, and through Jesus Christ, we receive cleansing and restoration. Let us walk in the light, cherishing the fellowship we have with God and with one another, ever grateful for the sacrificial love that cleanses us from all sin.
