When I Forgive: I Demonstrate My Faith In Christ

Writer: Dwight SchettlerDwight Schettler

How can I forgive as the Lord forgives me?

Conflict Resolution vs Reconciliation - Lesson 5, Forgive as God Forgave You, Question 6, p. 73

Forgiveness is a transformative act that reflects our faith and belief in the grace we have received. As believers, our capacity to forgive others is intrinsically linked to our understanding of the forgiveness granted to us through Christ's sacrifice. This post explores how forgiving others demonstrates our belief in our own forgiveness of sins, drawing upon the scriptures.

Forgiveness: A Testimony of Faith

In Acts 10:43, we find a powerful declaration: "To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." Forgiveness is not merely an act of letting go; it is an affirmation of the transformative power of Christ's sacrifice. When we forgive others, we bear witness to the truth that we have been forgiven through His name. It is a testimony that we have embraced the grace offered to us and that we believe in the redemptive power of His love.

Grace and Redemption

Ephesians 1:7-12 further illustrates the magnitude of this grace: "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ." By forgiving others, we emulate the lavish grace that has been bestowed upon us. It is an act of humility and recognition that we have been redeemed, not by our own merit, but by the boundless mercy of God.

Clothing Ourselves in Compassion

Colossians 3:12-13 calls us to embody the virtues of compassion and forgiveness: "Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive." Forgiving others is a reflection of our divine calling. It is an outward manifestation of our inner transformation and the grace we have received.

Forgiving others is a powerful demonstration of our belief in our own forgiveness of sins. It is an act that reflects our faith, embraces the grace of redemption, and manifests the compassionate love of Christ in our lives. As we forgive, we bear witness to the transformative power of God's mercy and reaffirm our own journey of faith.
