When I Forgive: I am a Disciple of Jesus Who Loves Others as God Loves Me

Writer: Dwight SchettlerDwight Schettler

How can I forgive as the Lord forgives me?

Conflict Resolution vs Reconciliation - Lesson 5, Forgive as God Forgave You, Question 6, p. 73

In a world where grievances and misunderstandings often lead to bitterness, the act of forgiveness stands as a testament to our faith in Jesus Christ. When we choose to forgive, we embody the love and grace that God has bestowed upon us, becoming true disciples of Jesus who love others as He loves us.

John 13:34-35 says, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." This commandment from Jesus is not a mere suggestion but a cornerstone of our Christian faith. It is through love and forgiveness that we reveal our identity as His followers. When we forgive, we mirror the unconditional love that Jesus has for us, showcasing to the world the transformative power of His grace.

Furthermore, 1 John 4:10-12 reminds us, "In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us." Forgiveness is an essential expression of this divine love. It signifies our acceptance of God's immense love for us and our willingness to extend that same love to others. It is through loving and forgiving others that God's presence is manifested in our lives, making His love complete in us.

The apostle Peter also emphasizes the importance of love in 1 Peter 4:8, stating, "Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins." This earnest love calls us to look beyond imperfections and transgressions, focusing instead on the redemptive power of forgiveness. By forgiving others, we give witness to God's covering sins with love, fostering unity and peace within our communities.

Forgiveness is not just an act of kindness; it is a declaration of our discipleship to Jesus Christ. By forgiving others, we live out the commandment to love as He has loved us, and we become conduits of God's perfect love. Let us embrace forgiveness, knowing that through it, we reflect the heart of Jesus and draw closer to the fullness of His love.
