What Promises Empower Us to Live As God's Children?

Writer: Dwight SchettlerDwight Schettler

How can I forgive as the Lord forgives me?

Conflict Resolution vs Reconciliation - Lesson 5, Forgive as God Forgave You, Question 8, p. 74

The Bible provides insights into the spiritual blessings bestowed upon believers, empowering them to live victorious lives. Let's delve into these key passages to uncover the strength and abilities God promises to us.

Ephesians 3:14-21

"For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen."

This passage is a prayer by Paul for the believers in Ephesus. It highlights several powerful promises:

  • Inner Strength: God grants us strength through His Spirit in our inner being. This divine empowerment enables us to endure challenges and triumph in spiritual battles.

  • Christ's Presence: As Christ dwells in our hearts through faith, we are rooted and grounded in His love, which forms the foundation of our spiritual strength.

  • Comprehension of Christ's Love: We are given the ability to comprehend the vast dimensions of Christ's love, which surpasses knowledge. This understanding fills us with the fullness of God.

  • Abundant Power: God works within us with a power that exceeds our imagination, enabling us to accomplish far more than we can ask or think.

1 Peter 2:24

"He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed."

Peter's epistle reminds us of the transformative power of Christ's sacrifice:

  • Freedom from Sin: Jesus bore our sins so that we might die to sin and live in righteousness. This liberation from sin empowers us to lead lives that reflect God's holiness.

  • Healing: By His wounds, we are healed—this promise encompasses both spiritual and physical healing, granting us wholeness in Christ.

Philippians 4:13

"I can do all things through him who strengthens me."

This well-known verse from Paul's letter to the Philippians encapsulates the essence of divine empowerment:

  • With Christ's strength, we can accomplish all things. This assurance provides us with the confidence to face any challenge and pursue our God-given purposes.

Paul writes in Ephesians 4:32: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Forgiving others as God has forgiven us is impossible – on our own strength. Yet our God calls us to do to others as He has done for us. How can we respond to such a call? By relying on the divine power and abilities that God promises to give His children. With Christ's presence, comprehension of His love, forgiveness of our sins, healing, and Christ's strength, believers are equipped to live out their faith victoriously and to embody the love and forgiveness of God.

God's promises are transformative. As His children, we are empowered by His Spirit, healed by His sacrifice, and strengthened by His presence. Embracing these divine abilities enables us to live lives of righteousness, love, and boundless potential. Let us continually seek to comprehend the power that God generously provides, for in Him, we can truly face all challenges.
