What Are Consequences of Pride and Arrogance

What are some of the idols of the heart?

Conflict Resolution vs Reconciliation - Lesson 2 - Repent Before God, Question 10, p. 30

Pride and arrogance are two of the most insidious idols that can lead individuals astray, deeply impacting their relationships and spiritual lives. In the realm of conflict resolution and reconciliation, these traits can be particularly destructive, preventing true healing and understanding. Scripture provides profound warnings against pride and arrogance, illustrating their severe consequences.

Proverbs 8:13 states, "The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate." This verse highlights that pride and arrogance are not just personal flaws but are seen by God as detestable and intrinsically linked to evil. When individuals allow pride to dominate their behavior, they distance themselves from God and His teachings, fostering an environment where evil can thrive. This separation from God's guidance can result in misguided judgments and actions that exacerbate conflicts rather than resolve them.

Proverbs 16:18 further warns, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." This poignant proverb reminds us that pride is often a precursor to downfall and destruction. In a conflict, holding onto pride can blind individuals to their own faults and the needs of others, leading to greater discord and eventual collapse of relationships. Arrogance can instill a false sense of superiority, which not only alienates others but also sets the stage for personal and communal devastation.

Matthew 23:12 offers a New Testament perspective: "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted." This teaching of Jesus underscores the inevitable humbling that follows self-exaltation. Those who approach conflicts with humility are more likely to achieve reconciliation and peace, whereas those who cling to pride will face humiliation and failure. Humility opens the door to understanding and forgiveness, essential components of true reconciliation.

Amidst these warnings, the gospel also provides a promise of hope and relief. Matthew 11:28 offers Jesus' comforting words: "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Here, Jesus encourages us that surrendering pride and seeking God's guidance can lead to peace and restorative rest. By turning to Christ and embracing humility, individuals can find the strength and wisdom to navigate conflicts with grace and achieve genuine reconciliation.

The consequences of pride and arrogance are clear and severe, yet Scripture also provides the pathway to overcoming these idols through humility and reliance on God's grace.
