What Are the Dangers of the Idol 'Love of Money or Material Possessions?'

Writer: Dwight SchettlerDwight Schettler

What are some of the idols of the heart?

Conflict Resolution vs Reconciliation - Lesson 2 - Repent Before God, Question 14, p. 31

The allure of money and material possessions is a pervasive temptation in today's society, but it is one fraught with significant spiritual dangers. The Bible provides insights into this peril, particularly in 1 Timothy 6:10 and Hebrews 13:5.

1 Timothy 6:10 warns, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.” This passage highlights that the love of money, not money itself, is the root cause of various evils. The insatiable desire for wealth can lead individuals astray from their faith, causing spiritual and emotional turmoil. This destructive craving can result in broken relationships, ethical compromises, and a life devoid of true contentment.

Hebrews 13:5 complements this by advising, “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” Contentment is emphasized here as an antidote to the love of money. By trusting in God’s providence and promises, believers can find solace and satisfaction that material wealth can never provide. The assurance of God's unfailing presence offers a profound sense of peace and security.

Amid these warnings, the Gospel provides a message of hope and assurance. Romans 4:25-5:2 states, “He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification. Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

This passage reassures believers that through Jesus Christ's sacrifice and resurrection, we are justified by faith and granted peace with God. This peace transcends any earthly wealth and offers an eternal perspective. In Christ, we find grace and hope that liberate us from the bondage of materialism and direct our hearts toward eternal treasures.

The dangers of idolizing money and possessions are real and spiritually perilous. However, by embracing the contentment found in God’s promises and the gospel assurance of Christ’s sacrifice, believers can stand firm against these temptations and rejoice in the hope of eternal glory.
