I just made a pastoral visit to an elderly lady at our church who has been having heart issues and surgeries. She's been a bit discouraged by the whole situation. She is a believer, but she's been going through a tough time. When I came into her house, her sister was there to help her out. So I spent a few minutes talking to both of them and getting to know her sister from out of state. We talked about family and politics, since the RNC has been going on. I then mentioned that I should get going soon, and asked if I could share a brief devotion. I read her 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:9. I then shared some of my own reflections on those verses. That despite all we're going through, we shouldn't loose heart, because as 4:16 says, "Though our outer-self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day." And vs 17 says, "this light and momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison." I encouraged her to keep her eyes on Jesus as she goes through these trials and difficulties. Ultimately he will wipe away every tear in heaven, and we will be with Him forever as he takes away all sickness, death, and suffering. That will be greater than anything we experience, and completely worth it all. After I shared, and she made a few comments. A few tears were shed. I offered to pray for her. So I asked the Lord to encourage and strengthen her in the middle of her health issues. Then I ended, said my goodbyes, and left.

I would say it depends on the person's position and standing in the church. I feel like Elders can and should be the ones to do this. But if the pastor seems hesitant to share his burdens and struggles a third party or individual from the synod should come in and help with that.

July 19, 2024 at 4:54:24 PM

The synod offers some of that. But ultimately its the responsibility of the church to make sure their pastor is being cared for.

Spiritual: PRAY, PRAY, PRAY. Send notes of encouragement. Say thank you. Give the pastor time and space to have a strong devotional life. Make sure they take their sabbath rest. Which is not just physically important, it's commanded by God and spiritually vital.; Church Responsibilities: Don't over-burden your pastor or church workers. Make sure they know their duties and responsibilities, and make sure they stay in that lane. Likely they already have enough on their plate. Find lay people to do things that are not a crucial part of pastoral care. ; Family: Don't compromise your Pastors time, especially evenings. Check in on your pastor's marriage and kids. If they need counseling, pay for it. Make sure you don't expect too much from the Pastor's wife. Although she is very much a part of the Pastor's calling. She is not the one you are calling on staff. You need to have healthy boundaries and healthy expectations. If they need a vacation, make sure they have everything they need to get away. Love and support the Pastors kids. It's not easy being the Pastors kid. It's good for their kids to have others speaking into their lives. ; Physical: Encourage your pastor to be physically active. Give him time and space to go to the gym. Maybe even consider paying for a gym membership. Encourage the pastor to have a true day of rest, sabbath break from all duties and responsibilities. ; Mental: Do wellness checks regularly. Pay for the pastor to get counseling as needed.; Social: Not over-working your church worker will give them the time and space to have social lives outside of the church. Encourage them to develop friendships outside the church. ; Financial: Like stated earlier, make sure you adequately support your pastor, based on the cost of living in your area and depending on family size. A family of 5 or 6 has a lot more expenses than a family of 3.

We need to pay our pastors and other professional church workers. This isn't just a suggestion, its God's command and will for the church to financially support those who labor in the work of the Gospel.

I don't think I've ever been in an Elder Board meeting that has had a full 45min Bible Study. Typically it's expected the Elders are in weekly adult Bible studies once or twice a week.

It means its a noble task, and not for the faint of heart. It is a high calling by God not to be undertaken lightly.
